How to Fish

On day 2, Nobu will post the quest Fishing for Compliments on the bulletin board. Talking to him will give you a blueprint for a . Crafting the Bobber Rod recipe will give you the Bobber Rod, which is used to fish.

To fish, set the Bobber Rod as your active tool, and face a body of water with fish shadows. Press the tool button (left click on keyboard, right trigger on controller) to cast your line out in the direction the farmer is facing; holding the button longer will send your line out farther away. You can also press the tool button again to quit fishing. Once the fish shadows notice your bobber near them, they will nibble on your line (shown as the shadow poking your bobber with bubbling noises) until one bites, indicated with an ! over the farmer's head and a splashing sound. When that happens, press the tool button again to launch the fishing minigame.

Fishing Minigame interface
The minigame interface shows the fish you've hooked, the fish's capture zone (light blue pie slice), your fishing dial, and a yellow bar indicating your time left to reel the fish in. The fish will move away from you very slowly when you aren't pressing the reel button; if it reaches the top of the minigame screen, it will escape. To reel in the fish, line up your fishing dial so it's inside the fish's capture zone and press the Reel button (shown at the bottom of the screen). Pressing the reel button when the dial is outside of the fish's capture zone will cause it to move away from you very quickly. Successfully catching a fish requires pressing the reel button while your fishing dial is inside the fish's capture zone and letting go if your fishing dial leaves the fish's capture zone.

Where to Fish

Fish can spawn in rivers, ponds, and oceans. Each body of water may have one or more spawn area for fish, and each spawn area has a maximum number of fish. The images below show the spawn areas across the different biome maps. Periodically when the current number of fish in a spawn area is less than the maximum, the spawn area will attempt to spawn a new fish. The Fishing Locations table below shows how often the spawn area checks if it can spawn a fish, as well as the chance for each fish to spawn when that check happens.

Town spawn areas
Grassy Plains spawn areas
Desert Canyon spawn areas
Mushroom Forest spawn areas
